Integrity: And How That Affects You

There was a time when veracity, reliability, uprightness and truthfulness were qualities that one looked for and found in a sales relationship. But marketing schemes and publicity stunts have taken a toll on the sales people of the world.  Today the dark side of sales has induced people to rely on their own research and resources instead of seeking out a knowledgeable sales person or team to assist them in product selection.  On top of this, online stores have taken a huge dent out of retail sales as more and more people find it easier to simply click and ship than to get in the car, make a call on the phone, or shop around to make a purchase.

This same phenomenon is happening with service orientated sales.  Think of services like Legal Forms Online, WebMD or GEICO Insurance.  These online services have filled the gap where integrity used to stand.  I mean, it used to be that your locally known and trusted attorney, medical doctor or insurance agent were the bulwarks of the neighborhood.  But those relationships have morphed and mean less to people today partially because of the marketing techniques that have destroyed rather than built on the integrity of these trustworthy individuals of the past.

Today an insurance agent is regarded as someone a little lower than a used car sales person, and everyone knows that hardly anyone has a family doctor that they can trust, let alone an attorney.  One merely has to think of all the attorney jokes to realize that these once trusted relationships have sunk to mean comparatively nothing.   And that is why it is so important to accentuate integrity.  If it isn’t good for the person(s) you are serving it isn’t good for anybody and that anybody includes yourself!

Integrity is the courage to say no, face the truth and do the right thing because it is right.  It is doing the right thing even when you know nobody is going to know you did or didn’t do it.  Integrity is the opposite of pretentiousness and hypocrisy.  Ultimately, “If you have integrity, nothing else matters because if you don’t have it, nothing else matters.”[i]
